France: Black Friday shopping trends and consumer advice

A recent study by Havas Market indicates that 27% of French consumers plan to make the majority of their Christmas gift purchases during Black Friday, marking a 6-point increase from the previous year. The average budget for Christmas gifts is expected to rise to €252, up from €245 in 2025.

Consumers are increasingly adopting new strategies to manage holiday spending, with 39% planning to anticipate purchases and 37% seeking promotions. Additionally, 39% of respondents intend to use artificial intelligence to assist with shopping preparations, a figure that rises to 61% among those under 35.

To avoid deceptive discounts, consumer experts recommend tracking current prices before sales begin to identify artificial price hikes. Under French consumer law, retailers must display the lowest price practiced during the 30 days preceding a discount announcement to prevent misleading 'crossed-out' prices.
