France blocks Tesla's Full Self-Driving system over safety concerns
France has refused to permit Tesla’s Full Self‑Driving (FSD) system on its roads, citing significant safety risks. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said the technology could exceed speed limits by up to 50 % and does not adequately monitor the driver’s attention, making the system unsafe for use in France. "We find that this system, while offering technical advances, still carries safety risks that are too great," he said.
Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Lithuania and Estonia have authorized the supervised FSD feature, but France expects the ban to remain in the short term while European regulators work on harmonised rules for autonomous vehicles. Tesla had hoped to roll out the system across Europe by the summer of 2026, and the French decision represents a setback to that timeline.
