France budget standoff: National Rally weighs response to government plan

France faces a critical budgetary standoff as the government considers using Article 49.3 to pass its budget without a majority. This move could trigger a no-confidence vote in parliament.

Marine Le Pen and the National Rally (RN) are currently signaling a potential inclination toward non-censorship to avoid political disorder, despite preparing their own fiscal alternatives. Le Pen is expected to present a five-year savings plan totaling EUR 125 billion, while Jordan Bardella will present the party’s counter-budget for 2027. The party appears focused on demonstrating economic seriousness ahead of future elections.

The survival of the government and the budget may depend on whether the Socialists or the National Rally choose to abstain, as the centre-right Republicans are not expected to support a no-confidence motion.
