France: Calls for victim appeal rights follow tragic death of teenager

The discovery of a teenage girl's body in Finistère, France, has reignited debates regarding the rights of victims within the judicial system. The victim had previously reported being raped by her father between the ages of 11 and 14, but the case saw little progress before she disappeared in March 2026. Her father has since been charged with murder.

In response to the tragedy, State Councilor Christophe Eoche-Duval has accused the judicial institution of “contempt for victims.” He is renewing calls for legislative changes that would grant victims the right to appeal criminal decisions. Currently, under French law, only the defendant and the prosecutor hold the right to appeal; victims can only contest civil aspects of a judgment, such as damages, rather than the verdict of guilt or the severity of the sentence.
