France caps visitors at popular natural sites for summer 2024

From late June to the end of August, several of France's most visited natural areas will limit daily visitor numbers. In the Calanques National Park near Marseille, the Calanque de Sugiton will admit only 400 people per day, with free online reservations required through the Troov platform; groups may contain up to five persons and slots open three days in advance.

On the island of Porquerolles in the Var, a daily ceiling of 6,000 visitors will be enforced, a rule that has been in place since 2021 and is backed by a charter signed with seven ferry operators. In the Breton island of Bréhat, a municipal order restricts weekday arrivals to 4,700 people between 08:30 and 14:30, from 28 July to 22 August.

These measures aim to protect fragile ecosystems from overtourism, reduce soil erosion and vegetation loss, and mitigate the impact of repeated heat waves. Authorities favour a reservation system over outright bans to keep access open while smoothing peak demand.
