France car insurance premiums vary significantly by region

Car insurance premiums in France are showing significant regional variations. According to data from Lelynx.fr, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region faces the highest average costs at approximately 781 euros per year, followed by Corsica at 765 euros. In contrast, rates in Brittany are roughly 45% lower, averaging 539 euros.

Within the PACA region, disparities are even more pronounced. The Bouches-du-Rhône department reports an average annual premium of 884 euros, driven largely by high theft rates; the department accounts for 7.6% of all vehicle thefts in France. In Marseille, average costs can exceed 1,030 euros, with some districts surpassing 1,200 euros.

Nationally, France Assureurs reports that the average premium for a first-category vehicle reached 511 euros (excluding tax) in 2025, a 6.5% annual increase. For comprehensive coverage, the average rises to 601 euros. Local factors such as weather patterns in coastal areas like Brest, urban traffic density, and Low Emission Zones (ZFE) continue to influence specific regional pricing.
