France childcare: Violence reports trigger parental distrust
A rise in reports of physical and sexual violence involving extracurricular activity leaders in France has led to a significant loss of parental trust in school-based childcare services.
In Paris, Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau reported that 132 extracurricular activity leaders were suspended in 2026, with 52 of those suspensions linked to suspicions of sexual violence. Additionally, over 200 criminal investigations are currently active within the capital's primary schools and nurseries.
The impact of these incidents is reflected in declining attendance; Parisian school leisure centers hosted 13% fewer children this summer compared to the same period in 2025. Consequently, many parents are opting for alternative childcare, such as increased teleworking, relying on relatives, or hiring private babysitters. Specialized childcare platforms have reported a 48% increase in demand for services between June and August compared to the previous year.
