France National Assembly begins review of comprehensive sexual violence law

A comprehensive legislative proposal aimed at combating sexual and gender-based violence has entered the legislative process at the French National Assembly. The bill, consisting of 69 articles and spearheaded by Socialist deputy Céline Thiébault-Martinez, is scheduled for review in a special commission before a public session in early October.

The legislation seeks to address the entire spectrum of violence, including prevention, victim identification, judicial proceedings, and the monitoring of perpetrators. Key measures include the creation of specialized jurisdictions for sexual and domestic violence, featuring dedicated judges and prosecutors, and establishing minimum investigative requirements such as mandatory interviews with victims and suspects.

The push for this law gained significant momentum following the death of Lyhanna, an 11-year-old girl found dead in the Gers region in June. In response to the legislative milestone, feminist and child rights coalitions have organized nearly 90 demonstrations across France, including gatherings in Poitiers and Strasbourg, to maintain pressure on lawmakers until the bill is passed.
