France confronts rising elderly isolation as habits and summer risks intensify

In France, loneliness among older adults is growing. INSEE reported that in 2022, 34 % of people aged 65 + felt lonely at least occasionally, while DREES data show 71 % of those over 60 still see family regularly but social contacts decline sharply after age 80. Psychologists identify three habits that deepen isolation: maintaining a rigid routine that rejects invitations, not voicing personal needs, and clinging to past relationships that no longer provide support.

During the summer, heat and isolation increase health risks for seniors living alone. Security firm Verisure promotes a "Button SOS" device and recommends practical steps such as appointing trusted neighbours, arranging daily video calls, improving home safety (e.g., anti‑slip measures), and keeping medication supplies accessible. Together, these measures aim to safeguard vulnerable elders while preserving their independence.
