France considers healthcare cost cuts amid rising insurance deficit

France is facing significant budgetary pressures regarding its national health insurance (Assurance Maladie), with a projected deficit of 13.8 billion euros for 2026. In response, the government is considering measures to reduce reimbursements for dental care, medical transport, and medications to prepare for the 2027 budget.

One proposed measure involves doubling the annual caps on medical franchises and fixed contributions. Currently capped at 50 euros each, the government may raise these to 100 euros, potentially requiring patients to pay up to 200 euros annually for non-reimbursable costs.
