France considers raising Livret A savings cap to 30,000 euros
The French government is considering raising the deposit limit for the Livret A savings account from 22,950 euros to 30,000 euros. The proposal, discussed by the Minister for Ecological Transition and Biodiversity, Monique Barbut, aims to generate additional funding to combat climate change.
By increasing the cap, the Caisse des dépôts could secure more long-term loans to finance infrastructure adaptation to climate change. Experts suggest the move could potentially generate up to 10 billion euros in additional outstanding funds, as over 10% of current accounts are already at the maximum limit.
While the Caisse des dépôts has reportedly welcomed the idea, the proposal still requires approval from the Prime Minister’s office and the Ministry of Economy. The Fédération française bancaire (FBF) has expressed opposition, arguing that the measure would tie up more savings in liquid, guaranteed placements rather than long-term investments.
