France imposes curfews in Paris and northern cities amid unrest
French authorities have implemented nighttime curfews in several cities, including central Paris areas such as Place de la République and Les Halles, as well as in Lyon and four northern cities. These restrictive measures aim to curb looting and vandalism following widespread demonstrations against the rising cost of living and the degradation of public services, specifically in health and education.
The unrest, which included significant mobilization on October 17 and October 24, has resulted in damage to over 3,000 commercial establishments. According to the Ministry of Justice, approximately 2,400 people have been arrested during the disturbances, with 174 held in pre-trial detention.
In response to the escalating situation, President Emmanuel Macron has rejected the resignation of the Interior Minister. Meanwhile, police and emergency services have faced significant challenges during the period of civil unrest.
