France considers suspending TikTok and Snapchat to curb looting

The French government is considering the temporary suspension of social media platforms, specifically TikTok and Snapchat, to prevent the organization of looting and urban violence. Following incidents of looting and violence on October 17 and 18, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez indicated that authorities are exploring these measures because rioters are reportedly using encrypted messages on these platforms to coordinate activities in real time.

The proposal has sparked significant political debate. Left-wing parties, led by La France Insoumise (LFI) and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, have criticized the potential move as an affront to freedom of expression. Additionally, legal experts have raised questions regarding the judicial viability of such a suspension.

Sébastien Roché, a political scientist at the CNRS, described the potential government action as a “rather crude analysis,” noting that major social unrest in French history, such as in 1968 or 2005, occurred without the influence of social media. The debate highlights the growing tension in the country between maintaining public order and preserving individual liberties.
