French Blood Agency EFS targeted in cyberattack on refrigeration systems FAST-MOVING

Hackers targeted Coolworld, a service provider for the French National Blood Agency (EFS), in a cyberattack occurring between the night of November 1 and the early hours of November 2. The attackers remotely manipulated temperature settings for refrigeration units, changing them from -30°C to a target setting of 110°C.

The affected facilities, including sites in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, contained donor samples and frozen plasma intended for transfusions and medicine manufacturing. On-duty technicians detected the temperature anomalies via monitoring systems and triggered emergency protocols, which included transferring blood products to secure locations.

The French Ministry of Health and the EFS confirmed that there were no biological losses, no impact on clinical blood supplies, and no disruption to transfusion services. French authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the incident. This attack follows a recent wave of similar cyberattacks targeting supermarket refrigeration systems across several European countries.
