France debates comprehensive laws to combat sexual and domestic violence
Legislative and regional discussions are underway in France to address the high rates of domestic and sexual violence against women and children. In the French National Assembly, a proposed law is being examined to provide a comprehensive response across prevention, protection, investigation, and justice. Key provisions include the creation of specialized police units for victim support and investigations, inspired by models in Spain, and the establishment of a dedicated judge for sexual and intra-familial violence to handle both criminal and civil matters.
Complementing these legislative efforts, the CESER Hauts-de-France organized a conference to examine why judicial proceedings for domestic violence often fail to reach conclusions. Data from the Ministry of the Interior indicates that between 2018 and 2023, 42% of domestic violence complaints in France were closed without further action. Experts and survivors have highlighted the need for better judicial training and support systems to address the difficulties faced by victims and the collateral impact on children.
