France opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3–1 victory over Senegal. Kylian Mbappé scored twice, first after a chance created by Olise and then a late winner in extra time, giving France three points in Group I.

In other tournament news, England face Croatia in the next round‑one fixture, with a fan poll showing 51 % of respondents predicting an English win, 35 % a draw and 14 % a Croatian upset. The same day also features Portugal's match against the Democratic Republic of Congo and several other group‑stage games slated across North America.

Separately, Hungarian club ETO FC Győr announced Mexican former international Efraín Juárez as its new head coach, ending the tenure of former coach Balázs Borbély. Juárez brings experience from playing at the 2010 World Cup and coaching in Colombia and Mexico.
