France Deploys Airbus A400M as Fire‑Fighting Aircraft

Within 24 hours of completing tests, the French defence forces used an Airbus A400M Atlas transport plane to drop fire‑retardant over the wildfires threatening the Bordeaux region. The aircraft, normally a strategic military transporter, was equipped with a modular system that can release up to 20 tonnes of long‑term fire retardant in less than ten seconds, creating protective fire‑break lines rather than direct water drops. French officials said the rapid deployment makes France the first country to employ this capability in an operational fire‑fighting mission.

The system is intended to lay down a carbonised barrier that starves advancing flames of fuel, helping to safeguard densely populated areas and critical infrastructure amid the severe forest‑fire season affecting western Europe.
