France deploys junior doctors to address medical shortages
New medical training initiatives in France are deploying junior doctors to regions facing healthcare access challenges. In the Charente-Maritime department, 18 junior doctors have begun practicing across 16 communes, including Saintes, Tonnay-Charente, and Saint-Georges-d’Oléron. This deployment is part of the “Terre d’accueil Jeunes Médecins” program, a collaboration involving the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region and the Regional Health Agency (ARS).
Similarly, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, 193 junior doctors have joined training sites to strengthen medical services, particularly in under-served areas. These doctors are in their fourth and final year of general medicine training. Under a system of supervised autonomy, they perform consultations, provide care, and lead prevention efforts under the guidance of experienced practitioners.
The program aims to consolidate the skills of future general practitioners while encouraging them to establish long-term practices in territories with low medical density.
