France deploys military assets to protect Saudi oil terminal

France has begun deploying military assets to Saudi Arabia to protect the oil terminal at Yanbu on the Red Sea. The deployment includes soldiers, radar, and defense systems intended to secure critical energy infrastructure.

President Emmanuel Macron announced the initiative in late September 2026, stating the objective is not to involve France in a conflict but to protect the site. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in mid-October that operational elements of the agreement are being implemented.

The Yanbu terminal is a strategic node for the East-West Pipeline (Petroline), allowing Saudi Arabia to export oil while bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. The move follows increased missile and drone attacks by Houthi rebels against Saudi energy infrastructure and airports, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
