France deportation deadlock: Stripped citizen stuck in detention

Boumedienne S., a man stripped of his French nationality by decree in February 2024, remains stuck in a French administrative detention center (CRA) due to a diplomatic deadlock regarding his deportation.

Born in Aubervilliers, Boumedienne S. has a criminal history involving radicalization. In 2018, he was convicted of criminal conspiracy related to terrorist activities involving the Islamic State, though he has contested some aspects of the charges. Following his release in 2021, he was later imprisoned for common law offenses, including theft.

Upon his release in July 2024, he was considered an irregular migrant in France because of his revoked citizenship. While he has expressed a willingness to be deported to Algeria, the process is stalled because Algerian authorities reportedly do not recognize his Algerian nationality, preventing the issuance of the necessary consular documents for his removal.
