France: Disability cards must be replaced by end of 2026

Old versions of priority, disability, and parking cards issued before 2017 must be replaced by the Carte mobilité inclusion (CMI) by December 31, 2026. While existing cards remain valid until that date, authorities and associations, such as Association Valentin Haüy, urge individuals to begin the replacement process early to avoid a potential interruption of rights.

The CMI is a modern, bank-card-sized document secured by a QR code and includes Braille. It exists in three forms: CMI priority, CMI disability, and CMI parking. The CMI parking card allows for free use of public parking spaces in France and the European Union, subject to local regulations.

Failure to update these documents by the deadline could result in significant consequences. Using an expired card for parking could lead to fines of up to 135 euros, while other improper uses could result in penalties of up to 1,500 euros. Early application is recommended to prevent administrative delays at MDPH offices.
