France ecological transition progress deemed insufficient by Court of Auditors
The French Court of Auditors (Cour des comptes) has issued a report describing the country's ecological transition progress as “insufficient” relative to its self-imposed objectives. While greenhouse gas emissions are declining, the rate of reduction is slowing, and significant challenges remain regarding biodiversity, water quality, waste reduction, and the phase-out of oil.
The institution emphasizes that delaying the transition will increase future costs rather than eliminate them. To meet 2030 targets, the report estimates an additional €82 billion in investment is required, necessitating a 12% annual increase in funding compared to the current 5% rate. This would effectively require more than doubling the annual budget over the next six years.
The Court argues that ecological action is not an economic hindrance but a means of protecting energy supplies and business competitiveness against global shocks. The findings coincide with the examination of the 2027 budget project, highlighting the immediate need for better-targeted financial efforts.
