France: Economic uncertainty drives cautious savings and investment trends

Recent studies highlight a divergence in financial behaviors among French citizens regarding savings and investment. According to research by TGM Research for XTB France, 44.7% of French people have postponed savings or investment decisions over the last year, citing a desire for greater economic, political, or fiscal stability.

This cautious approach is driven by significant financial pressure, with 82.1% of respondents reporting a decrease in purchasing power over the past 12 months. Fear of losing money is the primary deterrent for investors, cited by 51.7% of those surveyed. Consequently, many individuals are opting for traditional savings accounts over medium- or long-term financial placements.

In contrast, younger demographics (ages 18-34) show a strong intent to save. A study by the financial management app Plum indicates that 90% of young people plan to set money aside monthly starting in September. To achieve these goals, 51% of these young adults intend to participate in a ‘No Spend Challenge,’ a practice of limiting expenditures to only essential needs for one month to curb impulsive buying.
