France emerges as global epicenter for violent cryptocurrency attacks
France has emerged as a global epicenter for violent crimes targeting cryptocurrency holders, according to a mid-year 2026 report from Chainalysis. The report highlights a rise in “wrench attacks,” which include home invasions, kidnappings, and hostage situations used to force victims to transfer digital assets.
In France, approximately 30 such attacks have already been documented in 2026, surpassing the total recorded for the entire year of 2025. Globally, more than $30 million has been stolen through violent means since the start of 2026. While these physical attacks represent a smaller portion of total crypto-related crime compared to digital hacks and scams, they target specific, identifiable individuals.
Criminal methods often involve doxxing, phishing, or social media monitoring to gather personal data before executing physical threats. Despite the severity of these crimes, investigators note that the non-anonymous nature of blockchain transfers provides a trail that authorities can exploit to track extorted funds.
