France engineering school enrollments face decline amid rising demand
Engineering school enrollments in France are facing challenges despite a growing demand for technical expertise. Data from the Ministry of Higher Education shows that in September 2025, there were 157,600 students enrolled in engineering cycles, representing a 0.6% decrease from the previous year and a limited 2% increase over the last five years.
Specific declines were noted in schools under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education (-4.1%) and university schools (-7.6%). The report also highlights persistent social and gender inequalities. Women represent less than one-third of engineering students, with their share dropping slightly to 29.3% last year. Gendered patterns in field selection remain, with women favoring chemistry and life sciences, while men dominate sectors such as IT, electronics, and transport.
