France expands battery storage to manage negative electricity prices

France is experiencing a significant rise in negative electricity prices, recording 520 hours of such episodes since the start of the year. This phenomenon occurs when the supply of intermittent renewable energy, such as solar and wind, exceeds demand, forcing producers to pay to inject energy into the grid. This trend highlights a structural challenge in managing surplus decarbonized energy and maintaining grid stability.

To address this, large-scale battery storage is emerging as a critical solution. In Cernay-lès-Reims, France has inaugurated its largest battery storage facility, developed by TagEnergy and Banque des Territoires. The site utilizes 140 Tesla Megapacks to provide 240 MW of power for two hours, with a total storage capacity of 480 MWh. Representing an investment of over 100 million euros, the facility aims to absorb excess renewable energy during peak production and redistribute it during peak consumption periods to optimize the national electrical system.
