France expands rainwater tank subsidies, imposes heavy penalties

The intercommunal authority of Pévèle Carembault in northern France will renew its rain‑water tank subsidy programme until 31 December 2026. Households resident in Phalempin or any of the 38 member communes can receive a grant covering 50 % of the purchase price, capped at €100 per unit, with a total budget of €40 000. Applicants must be at least 18, have not used the scheme in the previous three years, and must buy the tank from a local supplier.

Collecting rainwater is legal and encouraged, but French law imposes strict sanitary rules. The water may be used for outdoor irrigation or car washing, but any indoor use such as drinking, cooking, or dishwashing requires filtration. Installations must also be linked to the public wastewater network. Violations of these provisions are punishable under article L.1324‑4 of the Public Health Code with up to three years’ imprisonment and a €45 000 fine.
