France expands security ties with Latvia and Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron is expanding security cooperation with European partners. In Latvia, Macron has agreed to begin negotiations regarding the country's potential participation in France's nuclear deterrence initiative. Additionally, France has committed to increasing its military presence in Latvia, with a specific focus on enhancing air defense capabilities.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Macron met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss security support ahead of winter. The discussions centered on providing SAMP/T air defense systems and missiles, supported by EU loan frameworks. France and Ukraine have signed a contract for radar supplies, and both nations are exploring the possibility of manufacturing air defense systems and missiles locally in Ukraine. France and Italy are also working to accelerate the delivery of Aster 30 missiles, with provisions to allow licensed production within Ukraine to protect energy infrastructure from Russian strikes.
