France expands senior housing and home adaptation support

The French government is implementing new measures to address the challenges of an aging population through housing reform. A national roadmap, announced by the Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Autonomy, aims to more than double the availability of shared housing for seniors. The goal is to exceed 400,000 available places by 2040, up from the current 275,000 distributed across autonomy residences, senior service residences, inclusive housing, and intergenerational residences.

Complementing these structural changes, the MaPrimeAdapt’ program will become a central mechanism in 2026 to assist individuals in adapting their primary residences. The initiative is designed to prevent falls and facilitate aging in place by financing works such as the installation of walk-in showers, stairlifts, and ramps. Financial aid can cover up to 70% of costs for very low-income households and 50% for modest-income households. Eligibility includes individuals over 70, those aged 60-69 with recognized dependency, and persons with disabilities. The program also mandates support from a project management assistant to ensure the quality and relevance of the home modifications.
