France expands smartphone ban to high schools and connected devices

France is implementing new regulations to ban smartphones in high schools, a measure that also extends to connected accessories such as smartwatches, wireless earbuds, and smart glasses. While the principle of regulating screen time has broad support, the practical implementation faces challenges. According to a survey by the SNPDEN-Unsa union, only 24% of school principals have already updated their internal regulations to include the ban and its associated sanctions.

Some institutions are adopting unique methods to enforce the rules. At Saint-Joseph College in Caen, students are required to place their mobile devices into signal-blocking, Faraday-style pouches upon entering the school to prevent any wireless connectivity.

The regulations allow for specific exceptions, including use for designated pedagogical activities or for essential medical devices, such as smart glucose sensors or hearing aids. Implementation remains uneven as schools work to define specific protocols and consult with student and administrative councils.
