France faces widespread unrest amid debt crisis and student protests

France is experiencing significant civil unrest as nationwide protests, initially sparked by student grievances regarding high school conditions and teacher shortages, have expanded to include labor unions and the Yellow Vests. The demonstrations, which saw crowds estimated between 550,000 and 800,000 people, have been marked by both peaceful marches and violent clashes resulting in property damage and injuries to law enforcement.

In Limoges, the town hall was destroyed by fire, and significant looting was reported in various cities. The unrest occurs against a backdrop of severe economic pressure, with France’s public debt projected to reach nearly 120% of its GDP and borrowing costs hitting a 26-year high. This fiscal instability has fueled public anger over the cost of living and perceived inequalities.

In response to the escalating disorder, the French government has mobilized approximately 70,000 security personnel and implemented various protest bans in several cities. However, the judiciary has overturned some of these restrictions, allowing demonstrations to proceed in certain regions. The Yellow Vests have called for further mobilization on October 31 to defend civil liberties.
