France faces declining student performance in PISA 2025

The PISA 2025 study results indicate a significant decline in the academic performance of 15-year-old students in France. Within a three-year period, mathematics scores dropped by 16 points, while reading comprehension scores fell by 18 points.

Analysis of the data suggests that common explanations for this decline, such as excessive screen time, may be inaccurate. Data from the OECD shows no direct link between digital usage hours and performance in math or reading across member countries. Furthermore, the decline in academic levels in France has been observable since the 1990s, predating the widespread use of smartphones and social media.

There is also a noted discrepancy between declining measured skills and the increasing number of high distinctions awarded in the French baccalaureate. While actual competencies are decreasing, the proportion of 'very good' mentions has risen significantly, potentially masking the need for increased educational rigor and parental involvement.
