France faces extreme weather impacts from heatwaves and wildfires
France is facing severe consequences from extreme weather events driven by climate change. Between May and July 2026, the country recorded the highest average temperature anomaly globally, at +2.8 °C compared to the 1991-2020 norm, according to Copernicus.
Wildfires have caused significant destruction and economic loss. In Sainte-Hélène, the municipality reported a loss of approximately 10% of its forest heritage, impacting local budgets. In response, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu promised 10 million euros for Gironde and 2 million euros for Landes to assist those affected.
Extreme weather has also disrupted tourism and local communities. Heatwaves have shifted vacation demand toward cooler northern regions like Brittany, which saw increased hotel occupancy and revenue. Additionally, a powerful tornado with winds exceeding 200 km/h devastated the town of Pomas in the Aude region, causing heavy material damage.
Meteorological models suggest these patterns may continue, with potential for a sixth heatwave in early September and shifts toward wetter conditions in the autumn and winter months.
