France revises economic growth forecasts amid deficit concerns
France is facing significant economic challenges as growth forecasts are being revised downward. The national statistics institute, Insee, has lowered its 2026 GDP growth projection to 0.4%, citing stagnant domestic demand, the impact of heatwaves, and budgetary difficulties.
Economy Minister Roland Lescure has acknowledged a downward revision of the government's own 2026 growth forecast from 1% to 0.5%. He attributed this slowdown to exceptional factors, including a 0.2% impact from the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz and a 0.1% impact from heatwaves. Lescure also noted that the 2026 public deficit is unlikely to meet the 5% target and will instead exceed 5% of GDP.
To address these fiscal pressures, the government is targeting a spending reduction effort of approximately 30 billion euros. For 2027, the administration aims for a deficit below 5.1% and anticipates a growth rate of 1%. Meanwhile, inflation concerns persist, with projections suggesting it could reach 2.9% by the end of the year due to rising energy costs.
