France faces fiscal crisis as bond yields exceed 5%

France is experiencing significant financial market pressure as its 10-year government bond yields rose above 5% for the first time since 2002. This surge, coupled with a widening spread against German bonds exceeding 170 basis points, has heightened fears of a systemic eurozone debt crisis reminiscent of the 2010 period.

The country faces a combination of political instability, social unrest, and structural economic challenges. Public debt is approximately €3.6 trillion, representing about 119% of GDP, while public spending stands at 57.2% of GDP. The annual budget deficit is estimated at roughly 5%.

ECB President Christine Lagarde has indicated that solutions for France's debt must originate in Paris rather than through central bank intervention. While some analysts, including those at BlackRock, suggest the current environment is qualitatively different from the 2011-2012 crisis due to stronger banking protections, the risk of financial fragmentation remains a concern for investors.
