France student protests escalate into widespread urban unrest
Student-led protests across France have escalated into widespread urban unrest, characterized by school blockades, arson, and violent clashes with law enforcement. The movement, driven by demands for increased education funding, more teachers, better facilities, and the abolition of the Parcoursup system, has spread from the Île-de-France region to cities including Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, and Lille.
Authorities report significant casualties and arrests. The Ministry of the Interior stated that 1,949 people were detained, with 1,800 resulting in arrests. Violence has led to injuries for 305 police officers and gendarmes, as well as over 100 students and education staff. In Marseille, incidents included attacks on school administrators and the burning of a fire truck. In Nantes, a fire broke out at a high school entrance.
In response to the escalating disorder, the French government has taken several measures. Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced that more than 400 schools would close, with classes moving to remote learning to ensure continuity. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened a crisis meeting as the situation transitioned from student demonstrations to what officials described as 'urban violence.'
While the government has expressed a willingness to hear legitimate demands, it has condemned the violence and the involvement of radical groups. Meanwhile, the movement has gained political traction, receiving support from figures like Jean-Luc Mélenchon, adding pressure to the administration ahead of future elections.
