France faces potential ecological budget cuts for 2027

Concerns are growing regarding the future of environmental funding in France as the government prepares the 2027 budget. Despite previous assurances from Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to protect ecological credits, recent fiscal decisions have impacted environmental resources.

To balance the 2026 budget and fund an emergency plan for agriculture, the government announced the cancellation of 500 million euros in credits, specifically targeting ecology and public energy services. For the 2027 budget, potential cuts are being considered for various public institutions under the Ministry of Ecological Transition, including water agencies, national parks, the French Biodiversity Agency, and Ademe.

While the Green Climate Fund is expected to increase to 1 billion euros for 2027 following a period of reduced funding in 2026, the potential reductions in state agencies have raised alarms about the ability to mitigate climate change impacts and energy price volatility.
