France records unprecedented excess deaths during June heatwave

A prolonged heatwave across France from 17 June to 2 July 2026 produced a provisional tally of 5,764 excess deaths, the highest mortality surge since the 2003 heatwave. Half of the excess deaths occurred within three days (25‑27 June). The spike affected all age groups from 15 years onward, but was especially severe among those aged 75 and over (about two‑thirds of the excess) and among 45‑64‑year‑olds, where 979 additional deaths represented a 55 % increase.

Geographically, the Île‑de‑France region saw the greatest impact with roughly 2,000 excess deaths and the Paris area recorded a 65 % rise in mortality. Other heavily affected regions included Centre‑Val de Loire, Grand Est and Pays de la Loire. The extreme temperatures, reaching up to 40 °C in the southwest, also triggered yellow‑alert weather warnings and heightened fire‑risk across the Mediterranean‑coastal departments.

The health emergency has sparked political debate, with opposition parties accusing the government of inadequate preparation. Officials acknowledge the need for a multi‑year strategy overseen by the prime minister’s office to strengthen hospitals, schools, care homes and emergency services. The crisis was highlighted by a funeral director in Orléans who reported overwhelmed mortuary capacity and the use of refrigerated containers to store bodies after a surge in deaths from Paris.
