France faces rising food insecurity and extreme poverty
Recent data and studies highlight a significant increase in food insecurity and extreme poverty across France. An economic study based on data from Les Restos du Cœur reveals that the number of people living in extreme poverty rose by 37% between 2018 and 2025.
In a separate report by Action contre la Faim, approximately 7 million adults in France—roughly one in eight people—report experiencing food shortages. The study indicates that the crisis disproportionately affects younger populations, with 25% of those aged 18-24 reporting a lack of food.
Beyond quantitative shortages, qualitative food insecurity is also prevalent; 39% of French citizens report having enough food but being forced to forgo nutritious items like meat, fish, or fresh produce due to budget constraints. This figure rises to 47% among young adults. Economic hardship remains the primary driver, cited by 80% of those facing dietary restrictions.
