France child homelessness rises 42% since 2022
A new report by UNICEF France and the Federation of Solidarity Actors (FAS) reveals a significant increase in the number of children without housing in France. At least 2,355 children were left without accommodation after calling the emergency number 115, representing a 9% increase over the past year and a 42% rise since 2022.
Of those without housing, 514 are under the age of three. The organizations warn that these figures are likely underestimations, as they do not account for unaccompanied minors, families living in squats, or those in slums, nor do they include families who are unable to reach or choose not to call the emergency services.
The report highlights the severe consequences of homelessness on children, including physical and mental health deterioration, social isolation, and exposure to violence. In 2025, the crisis led to the deaths of 14 children under the age of four and 12 adolescents aged 15 to 18.
Advocates are calling for a major political response, including a massive increase in social housing production and a dedicated budget to address the chronic underfunding of emergency accommodation programs.
