France faces significant forage deficit due to low grass growth

France is facing a significant forage deficit due to poor grass growth and inconsistent corn yields. According to Agreste, cumulative grass growth as of August 31, 2026, was 37% lower than the 1989-2018 average. This deficit affects nearly the entire country, with the lowest growth rates observed in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Grand Est, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Only the PACA region has avoided a deficit.

In Normandy, the lack of regrowth in pastures has forced many livestock farmers to begin feeding animals from their reserves, potentially reducing stocks intended for the 2026/2027 winter. To mitigate these risks, the Normandy Chambers of Agriculture are offering free forage assessments until October 15, 2026, to help farmers evaluate herd needs and available stocks. They also provide paid services for developing winter rations and optimizing available resources.
