France faces social unrest while Morocco appoints new education minister
France is facing significant social unrest as of October 2026, characterized by a convergence of economic and educational crises. Massive demonstrations, involving between 550,000 and 800,000 people in mid-October, have united students, precarious workers, and farmers. The protests are driven by a sharp decline in purchasing power, with families losing an estimated 1,200 euros since 2024, alongside student opposition to the ‘Parcoursup’ management system and deteriorating study conditions.
In Morocco, the newly announced government led by Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri includes Mohamed Nabil Benabdellah, Secretary General of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), as the Minister of National Education. His appointment has raised questions regarding the implementation of educational policies for the Amazigh language. Despite being recognized as an official language in the 2011 Constitution, the language faces ongoing challenges in achieving an effective and equitable presence within the Moroccan school system.
