France closes up to 500 schools amid violent student protests

Student protests across France have escalated into widespread unrest, leading to the closure of between 400 and 500 secondary schools. The demonstrations, which began in the Paris region in mid-September, are driven by demands for better school facilities, smaller class sizes, and more teaching staff to address chronic shortages.

National Education Minister Édouard Geffray reported that 24 schools have been burned or ransacked since the movement began. The cost of damages to school buildings and public spaces is estimated to exceed 50 million euros. The unrest has resulted in significant casualties, including 78 injured education staff and approximately 600 injured police officers.

Authorities have arrested more than 5,000 people, approximately 85% to 87% of whom are minors. Violent incidents have been reported nationwide, including a 15-year-old in Lens who lost a hand due to a police grenade and a woman in Marseille who suffered burns from an improvised flamethrower. While student leaders seek to address educational grievances, government officials have accused far-left groups of hijacking the movement to incite extreme violence.
