France faces widespread unrest and looting amid mass protests
Widespread violent protests and civil unrest have erupted across France, driven by rising living costs, inflation, and issues within the education system. Demonstrations involving hundreds of thousands of people—with some estimates reaching 800,000—have escalated into significant rioting, looting, and clashes with law enforcement.
In Paris and other major cities, rioters have targeted businesses, including mobile phone shops, luxury brands like Lacoste, and department stores. Property damage has been extensive, including the burning of vehicles and attacks on historic buildings. According to government data, over 2,300 people have been arrested, and nearly 1,000 security personnel have been injured.
In response to the chaos, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has ordered partial curfews in Lille and several northern cities to protect businesses from looting. The French government has suggested that a national state of emergency remains a possibility. Officials have characterized the unrest as “organized chaos” orchestrated by far-left extremists seeking to destabilize the country ahead of presidential elections.
