Heatwaves and strikes disrupt events and transport in France and Belgium
Extreme heatwaves across parts of France and Belgium are prompting significant changes to public schedules, event programming, and transportation services.
In Dax, France, the Feria schedule for August 12 and 13 has been modified to ensure public safety. Several animations have been canceled or rescheduled to avoid peak heat hours, and the Red Cross has been called to reinforce medical presence in the arenas. Similarly, in Saint-Martin-Boulogne, a cooled space at the town hall has been opened to provide relief for vulnerable residents.
In Liège, Belgium, authorities have strengthened security and medical measures for the August 15 festivities. Due to a red fire code in Wallonia, the planned fireworks display for August 16 has been canceled, though some local celebrations remain scheduled.
Transportation is also affected, with a planned SNCF strike in Normandy set to disrupt rail services between August 14 and 16. Affected lines include connections between Paris and Caen, Cherbourg, Rouen, and Le Havre. SNCF has announced options for fee-free exchanges or refunds for travelers.
