France fields altered lineup as Saliba and Thuram sit out Norway World Cup match

France entered the final Group I game of the 2026 World Cup with the top spot in sight, needing at least a draw against Norway. Coach Guy Stéphan confirmed that defender William Saliba would be rested because of a lingering back injury and forward Marcus Thuram would miss training due to a calf issue. The French staff expected Saliba to remain on the bench, while Thuram was also likely unavailable for the match.

With Saliba and Thuram out, Maxence Lacroix was slated to start alongside Dayot Upamecano in central defence, and Malo Gusto was mentioned as a possible right‑back. France went on to defeat Norway 4‑1, securing first place in the group and advancing to the knockout stage.

Saliba later said he had been dealing with discomfort for months but was managing it for the tournament, hoping the situation would not affect his Arsenal season.
