France firms urged to improve annual performance review practices

Annual professional interviews in French companies are often treated as a routine formality, yet they can significantly boost employee performance, motivation and retention. Research cited shows 80 % of employees believe these meetings improve daily performance, while half of firms fail to prepare them properly, resulting in rushed, 20‑minute sessions with little impact.

Guidance from HR experts emphasizes a structured approach: thorough preparation, clear agenda covering past performance, future objectives and development plans, and a robust follow‑up to turn commitments into actions. Effective reviews also help managers detect early signs of disengagement or untapped potential, supporting talent retention and a culture of continuous feedback. Since 2020, many organisations have supplemented annual appraisals with regular check‑ins, but the annual review remains a valuable tool when conducted with method and purpose.

The French Ministry of Labour sets certain legal requirements for these evaluations, underscoring their importance in aligning individual ambitions with corporate strategy.
