Lyhanna investigation: forensic reports reveal mechanical asphyxia caused death

New forensic examinations have provided clarity regarding the death of 11-year-old Lyhanna, whose body was discovered in an abandoned agricultural silo in Puycasquier, Gers, following her disappearance from Fleurance on May 29.

Medical experts have identified a ‘mechanical asphyxia syndrome’ caused by acute respiratory failure, consistent with an obstruction of the upper airways. While these findings explain the physiological mechanism of death, investigators are still working to determine the exact circumstances and method by which the child was deprived of oxygen. Previous examinations had noted bruising on the victim's arms, wrists, and ankles, which were considered indicative of restraint.

Jérôme Barella, a 41-year-old man, has been placed under formal investigation for the rape and murder of the minor. The legal proceedings will continue as investigators attempt to establish how the airway obstruction occurred.
