France: Four suspects charged in museum thefts

Four individuals, aged 23 to 51, have been placed under formal investigation following a series of museum thefts in France, according to the Nancy Interregional Specialized Jurisdiction (JIRS).

The investigation links two separate incidents from July. On July 5, three masked individuals broke into the Lalique Museum in Wingen-sur-Moder, stealing 27 pieces of jewelry valued at approximately 4.5 million euros. The heist lasted only a few minutes and involved breaking through an emergency exit and a fire door to shatter six display cases.

Investigators also linked the case to a July 1 theft at the Montans archaeological center in Tarn, where 37 Gallo-Roman gold coins were stolen, causing an estimated 120,000 euro loss.

A police operation involving 90 officers led to the arrest of six suspects believed to be involved in the thefts, their preparation, or the receiving of stolen goods. Of the four people charged, two have been placed in pre-trial detention and two are under judicial supervision.
