France: Funeral expense reimbursements and bereavement leave regulations
In France, specific regulations govern funeral cost reimbursements for retirees and bereavement leave for private sector employees.
Retirees may be eligible for funeral expense reimbursements through the Pension Insurance (Assurance retraite). This reimbursement is not an automatic grant but is instead deducted from any pension arrears owed to the deceased. The maximum reimbursement amount is capped at 2,286.74 euros. This is intended to assist families with the immediate costs of funerals, which average approximately 4,730 euros in France.
Regarding bereavement leave in the private sector, the duration of permitted absence depends on the relationship to the deceased. Under the Labor Code, employees are entitled to at least 3 working days for the death of a spouse, partner, parent, step-parent, or sibling. The death of a child entitles an employee to 12 or 14 working days. In the specific case of a child under 25, an additional 8 days of mourning leave may be granted. These days are paid and do not deduct from an employee's annual paid leave.
